Description
The Baptist Church, built in 1814 with a facade added in 1870 by J H Smith, is designed in the Italian Trecento style. It is a two-storey structure made of stucco. The gable parapet features an enriched cornice topped with a wrought-iron finial and is supported by corbelled brackets. The facade includes three round-headed blind arches, each containing paterae with traceried oculi, arranged in an echelon pattern. There are short three-quarter columns with crocket capitals, and a deep string course runs above the first floor. The corners of the building have pilasters with brackets and nook shafts that extend to the first floor, while the ground floor is rusticated.
The church has five windows, with the central section projecting slightly and featuring nook shafts, round heads, keystones, paterae, crocket capitals, and panelled imposts. The windows are adorned with Italianate tracery and diamond leaded lights, and there is a deep string course above the ground floor. In the center, there are three doorways, each with similar detailing, leading to double three-panel doors.
The Baptist Church, along with the gatepiers and walls to the forecourt, and Nos 2a to 29 (odd) Silver Street, form a cohesive group.
