Description

The Old Council House, located at 39 East Street, is possibly from the mid-19th century. This three-storey building features an ashlar front with distinctive details. It has a cornice adorned with gadrooning and a blocking course. The façade includes pilasters with an incised key motif, three windows that have fluted drip moulds and rosettes above them. The windows are fitted with sashes that have Gothic glazing bars. The name 'Old Council House' is displayed in low relief lettering above the first-floor windows. The building also has a modern shop front. It is part of a group with Nos 30, 40, 40A, 41, and 42, which are adjacent to Nos 1 to 3 East Gate.
