Description

Moxhams, located at 17 Woolley Street, is an 18th-century building constructed from ashlar. It stands three storeys high and features five sash windows with glazing bars, each surrounded by moulded architraves. The central window on the first floor and all ground floor windows have cambered heads and keystones. A plain string course runs at the first floor level, while a moulded string course at the second floor level is topped with a segmental pediment on acanthus-leaf enriched brackets above the central window.

The building is crowned with a heavily moulded cornice supported by modillions, and there is a plain parapet above. The central doorway, which has a keystone, features a panelled door and a stone doorcase with fluted Roman Doric pilasters. The frieze above the door is triglyphed and includes rose motifs in the metopes, topped by a triangular pediment.

To the left of the main facade is a one-window wing, which has a sash window in plain reveals on both the first and second floors. The ground floor of this wing features a semi-circular-headed opening with a keystone and imposts, leading to a modern wooden door. There are plain pilasters marking the division between the wing and the main facade, as well as at the right-hand side angle.

Small fore-courts are located on either side of the door, enclosed by low ashlar walls that ramp up to the house front, complete with moulded copings and bevelled surface panels. Three semi-circular steps lead up to the door.

Moxhams is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 21 (odd) along with the gatepiers and walls at No 21.
