Description

The Barley Mow Public House, at No. 71 Greencroft Street, dates from approximately 1820 to 1830. It is a two-storey building constructed of red brick laid on a projecting brick plinth. The roof is a low-pitched gable end with slate tiles, and features banded brick stacks at the gable ends. The eaves are flat. A painted board displaying the public house’s name is positioned between the storeys. The fenestration is symmetrical, with three windows on the first floor; the centre window is blind and displays the name panel, while two windows are present on the ground floor. These ground floor windows are flush-framed sashes with intact glazing bars, each with a flat, rubbed brick arch. The central entrance features recessed double doors, with four flush panels, two of which are glazed, and a rectangular four-pane fanlight above. The reveals are panelled, and the doorcase and head are also panelled. A projecting moulded cornice runs along the top of the building.
