Description

Croft House, dating from the mid to later 18th century, was originally two separate houses, one facing Bedwin Street and the other overlooking Green Croft. These were later joined with a staircase inserted between them. The Bedwin Street elevation is two storeys and has an attic, constructed of colourwashed brick with a raised plinth and string course. It features a moulded wood eaves cornice and a steep-pitched gable end with old tile roofing, now with two hipped dormers (originally four, the two on the left now replaced with a modern attic light). The symmetrical front has three windows, the outer two being tripartite sashes with intact glazing bars. The central door is of six panels, set within a doorcase featuring reeded pilasters supporting a flat scroll bracketed cornice and broken dentil cornice topped with an open pediment. This pediment is decorated with wreaths, swags, and an oval rosette in the tympanum. The Green Croft elevation has similar fenestration, but the original separate house has an additional storey, a band separating the storeys, and a modillion cornice. A new slate mansard roof has been added, along with windows in flush architrave frames with keystones, and a window illuminating the staircase link. The interior retains some original mantlepieces and a good staircase with delicate turned balusters, a moulded string, and handrail. The building forms a group with Nos. 54 to 60 (even) on Bedwin Street.
