Description

The walls on either side of the entrance to the gardens, which separate them from the forecourt of the Council House, date from the early to mid-18th century and are constructed of red brick. The section next to the house consists of three bays, while only one bay remains to the south of the garden entrance. The part of the wall closest to the house features three ashlar piers, with the string and plinth returning from the house and breaking forward over the piers. Each pier has block caps, which were formerly topped with urns, as indicated by the remains of the pedestals. The stone coping rises to meet the taller gate pier. A similar section of wall with a gate pier exists on the other side of the entrance, but it consists of only one bay. Of the gates, only the wrought iron standards remain attached to the gate piers, featuring a panel with a circle and scrolled finials.
