Description
The Roman Catholic Church of St Edith, built in the mid to late 19th century, was formerly a Methodist Church. It features a palazzo-style front facing east and is constructed of English bond brick with channelled stucco on the ground floor. The building is two storeys high and has a heavy Doric entablature that serves as a parapet for the hipped slate roof. The first floor has five cross-glazed sash windows, each adorned with alternating segmental and triangular pediments, scroll bracket surrounds, and flanking pilasters, all set on a prominent plinth with a moulded head above the ground floor. The central window includes a balustered balcony. On the ground floor, there are four windows set in rectangular recesses. The central entrance features a Doric doorpiece with half columns, leading to six-panel, two-leaf doors with sidelights and a four-pane overlight. This design continues around to Kingsbury Square, where there are two windows on each floor, one blind window on each floor, and a plain central bay. To the left, there is a segmental-headed doorway and a three-storey extension with overlapped eaves courses and three narrow windows.
Inside, plain stairs divide at the landing, leading to a fine first-floor meeting room from each end. This room boasts a coved and gilded ceiling cornice and pierced fretwork panels on the left side balcony, which is above the upper flights of the staircase. Former chimneys break through the front and back of the building, each with niches. The balcony projects on decorative corbels, and a niche on the landing contains a plaster statue of St Edith, made around 1821 for the Catholic Chapel at Midford Castle near Bath.
