Description
Nos 33 and 34 on St John's Street are a block of buildings, likely dating from the 17th century, but were refronted in the late 18th century. The structure has three storeys. The ground floor is finished in stucco with incised lines on a projecting plinth. The upper part is timber-framed and pebble-dashed, overhanging the ground floor, with a moulded string course across the ends of boxed beams, supported at the corners by double scroll-cut brackets. There is a cement string course above the first-floor windows, a moulded cornice, a lead gutter, and a slate roof. The upper floors feature six windows with architrave frames.
On the ground floor, from the left, there is a six-panel door, flush type, leading to No 33, with a rectangular fanlight featuring crossed diagonals. Next is a four-panel double door, with the upper part glazed and a similar fanlight. This is followed by three grouped windows, each four panes wide in moulded frames, and another six-panel door for No 34, which also has a similar fanlight. The interior may hold some interest.
Nos 23 to 41 in sequence and part of the National Westminster Old Bank in Market Place create a very fine group.
