Description
Nos. 11 and 12 St John's Street are a builder's office and showroom dating to 1903. The building incorporates an earlier range at the rear, number 12. The building is an Edwardian example of the Domestic Revival style and contributes considerable group value to the centre of Devizes.
The west front is asymmetrical with a three-storey design. A first-floor oriel window is positioned on the right, supported by carved wooden brackets and extending to the second-floor window set within a gable featuring applied timber framing and a carved wooden shield inscribed with the date and initials F.R. 1903. A three-light window is located on the left of the first floor. A similar, but larger, oriel is present at the centre of the narrower south elevation, rising to a gabled first-floor bay window which breaks the eaves and features matching timber framing and a carved wooden shield. The first and second-floor oriels and windows have moulded frames with leaded pane casements. Moulded cornices are above the first-floor oriels, and a continuous moulded string course runs at second-floor cill level below the coved eaves. The ground floor showroom extends across both the west and south fronts, characterised by stone piers, wooden pilasters, and a deep fascia. A doorway is on the left of the west front, and the showroom features plate glass windows.
Number 12 St John's Street is incorporated into the overall accommodation of number 11. It is a stuccoed two-storey, two-window range with a 19th-century shop front featuring fluted pilasters and a cornice over a replacement door on the left. Two- and four-light casement windows are positioned above.
The interior has been altered; the ground floor is now a large, single room with later partitions added on the first and second floors.
