Description

Hobbs and Chambers is a showroom and offices that was formerly a public house. It dates from the late 18th century and has had some alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of brick, which is now rendered on the front and right side, and features an artificial slate roof on the front range and rear wing. There is a rendered stack on the right end, with the upper part in brick, and a truncated brick stack on the left end. The main front faces Cricklade Street, with the entrance located on the right side in Castle Street.

The building is three stories high and has a three-window range. On the first floor, there are three late 18th-century 6/6-pane sash windows set in 20th-century moulded surrounds that mimic an early 18th-century style, complete with moulded cills. The second floor features three similar 3/6-pane sashes in matching surrounds. The ground floor has a 20th-century timber shopfront with three windows that include glazing bars, supported by four Doric pilasters, a frieze, and a moulded cornice. The corner on the right side is splayed and features a moulded bell in relief at the first-floor level. The right side of the building has three windows similar to those on the front on each floor, with a 20th-century long window in the centre that consists of a 3 x 8-pane fixed light with individually-openable panes in a similar shouldered surround. The shopfront continues with a glazed door in the centre. The interior has not been inspected, but it is noted to have a 20th-century staircase and other 20th-century alterations.
