Description
No. 15 Castle Street is a pair of shops dating from the late 17th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared limestone rubble and features a stone slate roof with no visible chimney stack. It has two gables at the front and stands two storeys tall with an attic, presenting a three-window range.
On the first floor, there are three 2-light ovolo-moulded stone mullion and transom windows, which appear to have been entirely renewed in the 20th century and now have modern casements. Above, in the gables, are two similar windows. The ground floor features two small 20th-century plate glass shop fronts, which are complemented by an ashlar fascia with a small moulded cornice above. There are moulded strings above the first floor and over the windows in the gables. A plain lead hopper head is located at the centre front, decorated with a Sun fire insurance plaque.
The interior has not been inspected but is noted to have undergone 20th-century alterations. The building is included for its group value.
