Description
23 Castle Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the early to mid-18th century and features coursed squared limestone on the front, with render on the right side. The roof is made of stone slate with a half-hip on the right side and Welsh slate on the rear slope. There are two rebuilt brick stacks at the rear of the building.
The house has three storeys and a cellar, with a five-window range. On the first floor, there are five 6/6-pane horned sash windows in flat unmoulded stone surrounds, each with keystones and stone cills. The second floor has five similar windows. The ground floor features four 8/8-pane sash windows in similar surrounds.
At the center of the ground floor, there are a pair of 20th-century hardwood doors set in a flat eared surround that resembles the window surrounds. These doors are flanked by narrow pilaster strips that support heavy unmoulded console brackets for a stone hood with a moulded edge. There are four openings to the cellar beneath the ground floor windows. Band courses run over the ground and first floors, supported by the keystones of the window surrounds. The interior has not been inspected, but the ground floor has been noted as having been opened out and altered in the 20th century.
