Description
No. 20 Castle Street is a shop with a flat above, dating from the late 18th century. The front is finished in stucco, and it has a parapeted stone slate roof with rebuilt brick stacks at both ends. The building has three storeys and a cellar, featuring a four-window range. On the first floor, there are four 6/6-pane sash windows set in recessed surrounds with projecting cills. The second floor has four smaller 3/3-pane sash windows in plain reveals, with projecting cills that are broader than the openings, possibly indicating remnants of a former cill band. The ground floor showcases a late 19th-century timber shop front, which includes flanking pilaster strips, carved console brackets, a frieze, and a moulded cornice. There are two windows with three panes each on either side of a central glazed door, and a simple iron grille provides light to the basement, located in the stall riser to the left. A band course runs above the first floor, and there is a moulded eaves cornice and blocking course at the top. The interior has not been inspected.
