Description
No. 4 Market Place is a mid-19th century shop with storage located in Cirencester. The building features a stucco front and has three storeys, with a roof that is not visible behind the parapet and no chimneys apparent.
The first floor showcases a single nine-light window that spans the full width of the façade, with round-section mullions that have moulded bases and tops, creating an arcade with segmental heads for each light. The second floor contains four 19th-century horned plate-glass sash windows set in flat chamfered surrounds. On the ground floor, there is a 20th-century plate glass shopfront and a 20th-century four-panel door framed by a 19th-century timber surround, which includes reeded pilaster strips and console brackets supporting a frieze and moulded cornice.
The first floor is flanked by panelled pilaster strips, with a moulded cornice above the first floor windows and a recessed panel above that. The second floor windows are topped by a bracketed cornice with a recessed panel above, and there is a bracketed eaves cornice along with a coped parapet featuring recessed panels and three panelled dies.
Inside, the building has a 19th-century closed string staircase with stick balusters leading from the ground to the first floor. There is also a 19th-century glazed screen that forms an office at the rear of the first floor, which is otherwise undivided, likely used for shop or workshop purposes. A second 19th-century staircase with cast-iron balusters connects the first and second floors, featuring a straight flight with winders at the bottom.
