Description
This is a shop with upper floors, dating from the early 19th century. It occupies a corner site in Cirencester, with frontages to both Market Place and West Market Place. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar, with a double-pile Welsh slate parapeted roof and a rendered stack to the right.
The Market Place elevation has three storeys to the left and four to the right, each bay containing a single window. The first-floor window to the left is a 6/6-pane sash in a plain reveal with a stone cill. The first floor to the right has a triple sash window with 2/2-, 6/6-, and 2/2-pane sections, featuring timber mullions. The second floor has a similar window, and the third floor has a 1/2- 3/6- 1/2-pane sash. The ground floor has two shopfronts, likely dating from the mid-20th century but possibly retaining some 19th-century elements. One shopfront has a plate glass window with bronze arched glazing bars above a recessed glazed entrance door with overlight. This shopfront also has a tiled stall riser and pilasters with console brackets, along with a blind box above. The other shopfront extends around the corner to a main entrance on West Market Place and displays single plate glass window with stainless steel surround, displaying applied sans serif lettering "FISH. GAME /& POULTRY”. Further lettering, “BARNETT FISH & POULTRY” is also visible. The shopfront has a bay on the corner splay and the first bay of the West Market Place front divided by square pilasters with steel shutters. The final bay on the West Market Place elevation has sliding steel windows.
The Market Place elevation features a band course above the first floor to the left and giant pilasters flanking the facade. A continuous molded stone eaves cornice runs along the top, along with a coped parapet rebuilt in reconstituted stone. This cornice and parapet are continuous with the adjacent building at No. 3 Market Place. The West Market Place elevation has two 6/6-pane sashes to the first floor, one similar sash and one blind window to the second floor. A plank door with overlight is located in a plain reveal to the left of the shopfront. The band course, cornice, and parapet continue from the Market Place elevation.
The interior was not inspected, but the owner reports that the right-hand portion of the Market Place elevation conceals a timber frame.
