Description
The Cirencester War Memorial is a Calvary cross made of Clipsham stone, located next to the Church of St John the Baptist. It features a depiction of Christ supported by two figures. Below this, there is a roundel showing a pelican in her piety, and the memorial has a tapering faceted shaft that rests on a square plinth and a three-stepped octagonal base. On the back of the crucified Christ, he is depicted as a child in the arms of his mother, with a shield at her feet displaying the Greek letters Alpha and Omega.
There are inscriptions on two sides of the plinth. The main dedicatory inscription on the east face reads: "DEDICATED IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF CIRENCESTER WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR AO DNI 1914 – 1919 ALSO IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945." The west face features relief lettering that states: "IS IT NOTHING TO YOV ALL YE THAT PASS BY."
Additionally, a small plaque on the south face of the pedestal reads: "CIRENCESTER WAR MEMORIAL 'LEST WE FORGET' PLEASE RESPECT THIS MEMORIAL CROSS."
