Description

This is a shop with living accommodation above, likely dating to the early 19th century, though it incorporates elements of an earlier building. The front was refaced in the early 19th century, concealing what was probably a gabled building with a half-hip roof, the front of which stopped short of the present building line. A large rubble chimney stack is on the right slope to the rear.

The building is three storeys high, with an attic and cellar, and has a two-window front. The first floor has two six-pane sashes in simple reveals with stone sills. The second floor has two similar windows. The ground floor features a 20th-century shopfront with two timber bow windows with glazing bars, flanking a recessed door in a rusticated ashlar surround with quoins. The frieze now bears a timber sign and a moulded stone cornice. A fire escape door is located in the gable of the front roof. A band course runs above the first floor and the building has moulded stone eaves and a coped parapet that continues with No. 1 Market Place.

The right side of the building has two six-pane sashes on each of the first and second floors. The ground floor has a 19th-century canted bay with plate glass sashes, a moulded stone cornice, and an overhanging blocking course above the steps. There’s also a 20th-century cellar door, a blind window, and a four-panel door. The band course, cornice, and parapet are consistent with the front of the building.

The interior has not been inspected, but it is believed to have been refaced in 1828. The front of the gabled roof indicates the former line of a jettied timber-framed building.
