Description

Halford House is an 18th-century building located on the northeast side of High Street. It is constructed of deep red brick, with lighter red brick dressing. The main block features a slightly recessed wing on the left and has a total of three storeys. The façade includes five sash windows with glazing bars, all positioned under flat arches.

A stucco band on the first floor acts as a pediment for four brick pilasters that have carved Corinthian capitals. Beneath this is a stone entablature with a cornice that is modillioned and denticulated at the eaves level. The roof is masked by a panelled parapet. Access to the house is via four stone steps leading up to a six-fielded panelled door, which is topped by a rectangular fanlight featuring diagonal glazing bars set in a shallow reveal. This entrance is framed by an architrave surround, Doric pilasters, and an entablature adorned with triglyphs and a segmental pediment.

The central window on the second floor has a stone architrave surround with a taller keystone, while the first-floor central window features an architrave surround and a pediment supported by consoles. The ground and first-floor side pairs of windows are embellished with triple keystones. The building also has a brick plinth with four small cellar windows.

Halford House is part of a group of listed buildings that includes Nos 1 to 11 (odd), 15, 19, 21, an outbuilding east of No 21, 23, 23A, 25, 29, 33, 35A, 37, 37B, 41A, 41B, 41, 43, 45, and 53 to 63 (odd).
