Description

The Old House, located at No 27 West Street, is a 18th-century building that stands three stories tall. It is constructed of vitreous brick with red dressings and features narrow angle pilasters that extend the full height of the building. The house has moulded strings at the first and second floor levels, and a moulded and dentilled wood cornice that breaks forward over the pilasters, which have moulded caps and a section of architrave and frieze beneath the cornice. The parapet is adorned with angle blocks and a stone coping, and the roof is covered with old tiles.

The façade is three bays wide, with the outer windows on the upper floors being three-light, segmental-headed, and featuring panelled frames with corner roundels and panelled tympana. The false central windows on the upper floors have curved heads and fluted pilasters on either side. All windows are fitted with moulded stone cills. On the ground floor, there are two large windows that are four panes wide, complete with panelled shutters, and a central six-panel door set in a boxed doorcase. This doorcase is flanked by narrow fluted Composite pilasters and topped with an entablature that includes a frieze enriched with fruit and musical instruments, along with a bracketed cornice. A brass lion knocker is mounted on the door.

It is noted that No 25 has been demolished and replaced by a modern two-storey building with an attic, which is not included in the listing. The Old House is part of a group that includes Nos 27 to 35 (odd) and Nos 37 to 51 (odd).
