Description

39 St John's Street, formerly known as The Crown Hotel, is a building dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It stands three storeys tall and is finished in painted stucco. The ground floor is rusticated and features a string course at the first-floor level, which supports flanking Doric pilasters. Above this, there is a moulded cornice that breaks forward over the pilasters and a parapet with stone coping. The roof is a concealed gable end covered with slate.

On the second floor, there are three recessed sash windows, each four panes wide, with block sills. The first floor has three recessed early 19th-century marginal glazed casements. The ground floor features two square windows, three panes wide, and a very wide central door consisting of six vertical flush panels set in a plain surround. This door is topped by a low pitch open moulded pediment supported by cut brackets and a broken cornice.

Above the door, there is a balcony that was formerly in good condition. This balcony has a diagonal bar pattern with rings and star ornaments at the junctions of the bars, along with double panelled corner standards that feature diagonal bars on balls with acanthus ornament.

The building is part of a notable group that includes Nos 23 to 41 and a portion of the National Westminster Old Bank in Market Place.
