Description
No. 58 Bridge Street, formerly known as the Crown Hotel, is a building that dates back partly to the medieval period, with significant restorations and alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries, along with some modern additions. The central part of the building is two storeys plus an attic and is set back from the street at the rear of a courtyard. It features long, two-storeyed projecting wings on either side, each with gabled ends that overhang on heavy wooden brackets. The exterior is finished in painted cement.
The central wing has two wide windows with horizontal sliding casements, flanked by coupled pilasters. To the right, there is a covered way with exposed timber beams above, and to the left, a splayed bay with one window, which includes a 19th-century plain pilaster doorcase, an entablature, and a later divided door. The roof has two gabled dormers and is covered with slates. The wings contain plain sash windows, with the left wing featuring a modern shop front integrated into the gabled end. This building was originally part of an enclosed courtyard typical of medieval inns, making it a rare example of its kind. It was unoccupied as of 1976, and while the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to be of interest.
