Description
The Bell Tower is an early 16th-century structure built by Abbot Lichfield. It rises in three stages to a height of 110 feet and features an archway with unfinished vaulting. The tower is topped with openwork battlements and pinnacles, showcasing a fine and very late example of the Perpendicular style.
The Bell Tower is part of a group that includes the Church of All Saints, the Church of St Lawrence, Abbot Reginald's Wall, the Porter's Lodge, the remains of the west wall of the North Transept of the Abbey, the archway to the south of these remains, Abbot Reginald's Gateway, the Old Vicarage, the Public Library, Nos 6 and 6A, Nos 7 and 8, and Walker Hall, along with Nos 53 and 54 which incorporate the remains of the Abbey Gate, the gate and railings of No 53, the remains of the Abbey Stables, The Almonry, The Stocks, Merstow Green, and Nos 4 and 5 Abbey Gate, as well as the remains of the south wall of the Abbey Precinct on Little Abbey Lane.
