Description

The building at 29 Market Place dates to 1894 and is an example of Neo-Georgian architecture. It is three storeys high, constructed of red brick over a modern ground floor. A stone frieze features heavy floral swags, topped by a stone cornice and parapet. The parapet is panelled with four piers, each crowned by banded spiked ball finials. A small pediment sits in the centre of the parapet. A stone frieze runs below the second and first floor stone sill courses. The building has four windows, featuring two-light transomed casements within architrave surrounds. The second-floor windows are shouldered, while the first-floor windows each have a cornice supported by carved scroll brackets. The modern shop front on the ground floor retains flanking banded piers with foliate capitals, and heavy brackets support the cornice above. The building occupies an important position within the Market Place, demonstrating strong visual relationships with adjacent buildings. Nos. 29 to 42 (consecutive) and the Market Hall form a group.
