Description
Toll Gate Cottage is a 17th-century cottage located on the east side of the A345 in Ogbourne St George. It is constructed from flint with limestone dressings and features timber-framed gables and a thatched roof. The building is single storey with an attic and consists of two bays. It has a lobby entry plan, with a through passage between back-to-back stacks that leads to a later extension, which likely served as a second entrance originally. The central boarded door is located under an extension of the roof that forms a porch. The cottage has timber windows with diamond leading, and there is a stair window to the left of the door. The west gable is timber framed above the wall plate and has brick noggings. The roof is half hipped and features a central 17th-century brick stack with an added flue. At the rear, there is a full-length 20th-century slated brick lean-to. Inside, the main parlour is located to the east and has a deep chamfered spine beam, while the original kitchen is in the west bay.
