Description
The barn at Hallam Farm buildings dates from the 14th to 15th century. It is timber framed and weatherboarded on brick sill walls, with the weatherboarding replacing wattle and daub. The barn features a thatched roof and consists of six bays, with a 20th-century lean-to at the west end. There are cart doors in the third bay from the west on the north side, and a narrow low door opposite, which has been replaced.
Inside, the barn has four complete cruck couples, which include arch braced collars and stub ties that support the outer rafters, which are partly trenched for the lower of two purlins. Three of the couples have Type C apex saddles notched for a diagonally set ridge tree, while the center couple features a Type F1 apex with a king post. The trusses are scratch numbered from the east, and the purlins have curved windbraces. The fifth truss is a standard tie-beam and collar truss with jowled posts and curved braces to the tie, but it is contemporary with the crucks. The first truss likely had a full tie-beam, which has been replaced with a later timber. The original rafters have the thatch tied on.
The external walls are two panels high, with studding in the lower panel and tension braces above, including one original door jamb. The entire structure is practically complete, including the groundsills, making it of outstanding merit.
