Description

Cambridge Lodge is a villa built around the 1850s, located on Old Torwood Road in Torquay. The building features a cement-rendered exterior and a hipped slate roof, with stacks that have rendered shafts, platbands, and projecting cornices. The villa has a double-depth plan and is two rooms wide.

The south garden front is asymmetrical with a three-bay entrance. It has deep eaves, an eaves band, and a sill band. There are pilaster strips on the left and right sides of the ground floor, and stuccoed rusticated quoins on the first floor. The central bay has a projecting porch with a round-headed doorway that features a moulded architrave and a moulded string at the springing. The porch is topped with a deeply-projecting moulded cornice and a parapet. To the left of the porch, there is a shallow projecting stack with its shaft extending through the eaves. The windows on the ground floor to the right and the first floor in the center and to the right have moulded architraves and are fitted with 12-pane sashes.

To the right, there is a simpler, lower-roofed service wing with a 12-pane sash window. The garden elevation has two windows and mirrors the style of the entrance front, featuring a canted bay on the ground floor to the left, complete with moulded architraves, cornices, and parapets. The interior has not been inspected but may contain interesting features. Cambridge Lodge is very complete externally and forms an attractive pair with Grey House nearby.
