Description

Torwood Lodge is a villa built in the 1860s, located on Torwood Gardens Road in Torquay. The building is designed in the Italianate style and features a plastered exterior with a slate hipped roof. It has stacks with rendered divided shafts, bands, and projecting cornices. The villa has an approximately rectangular plan, with the garden front facing southeast and the entrance on the northeast side.

The exterior consists of two storeys with deep boxed eaves and an eaves band, along with stucco pilaster strips and a moulded platband. The symmetrical southeast front has three bays, with the central bay being plastered and recessed, and the pilasters rusticated on the first floor. The ground-floor windows have floating cornices on consoles, while the first-floor windows are adorned with moulded architraves, all featuring 2-pane horned sashes.

The right return of the building mirrors this style and includes a projecting gabled bay with a round-headed doorway to the left, which has panelled reveals and a moulded porch hood on consoles. The entrance features a four-panel door with a fanlight that has spoke glazing bars, along with one ground-floor and one first-floor window that match those on the garden front. There is also a flat-roofed addition at the right end, and the house has been extended into a former stable block at the right end. The interior has not been inspected but may contain interesting features. Torwood Lodge is part of a group of villas that are informally arranged around a public park.
