Description

Haldon Rise is a large villa located on Haldon Road in Torquay, likely built in the 1870s, as it does not appear on the 1866 Ordnance Survey map. The villa features plastered walls and a slate roof, with stacks that have rendered shafts and moulded cornices. The building has a rectangular double-depth plan, with the entrance on the west side, a north service wing, and a stable block.

The exterior is two storeys high, with deep eaves supported by moulded brackets, stuccoed quoins, an eaves band, and a platband. The windows are framed with moulded architraves and paired sill blocks. The front is asymmetrical with three bays; the central bay projects and has a hipped roof, while the right-hand bay is blind and includes a lateral stack. A round-headed doorway features a moulded architrave and keyblock beneath a floating cornice on consoles, with a panelled door and fanlight that has ornamental glazing bars. Above the doorway is a round-headed first-floor window with pilasters, a moulded architrave, and a keyblock, featuring paired round-headed lights and a roundel in the tympanum. The returns of the central bay have blind round-headed first-floor windows and 4 over 4-pane ground-floor sashes, while the left-hand bay has 12-pane sashes. The garden (south) elevation includes two two-storey canted bays, with 8-pane sashes on the first floor and 4 over 1 on the ground floor. There have been alterations and extensions to the rear stable block.

The interior has not been inspected but is likely to retain features of interest. Historically, the villa was called Fairholme on the 1906 Ordnance Survey map.
