Description

Wylam Lodge is a large villa dating from the 1870s. It is located on Haldon Road, Torquay. The building is of stucco construction with natural slate roofs, incorporating lead rolls and stacks with rendered shafts, dentil cornices, and sunk panels.

The building has a rectangular, double-depth main block and a north service block. The main entrance is on the west side. The asymmetrical front has a 1:1:2-window arrangement, and features deep eaves supported by paired moulded brackets, an eaves band, a platband, a moulded sill band, and stuccoed rusticated quoins. The main block is broken forward and gabled in the centre, with a projecting stack to the right and a projecting porch to the left. The porch is richly detailed with corner pilasters, a dentil cornice, and a balustraded parapet. The porch features a large, round-headed doorway with a panelled door, a fanlight with wrought-iron decoration, and a round-headed window to the return. Windows to the main block are largely 2-over-2-pane sashes with horizontal glazing bars and sunblind fascias, with a tripartite window in the centre. The service range is to the left and displays simpler detailing, including some small-pane sashes and a round-headed first-floor window with radial glazing bars.

The garden front formerly featured canted bays with pilasters and a conservatory with close-set lights, a ridge lantern, and ornate iron finials. The interior has not been inspected but may contain features of interest. Wylam Lodge was not shown on the 1866 Ordnance Survey map and was originally called Malpas Lodge, later renamed Kya Lami by 1906. It served as a family home for the Plumers from 1876 to 1885, and subsequently for General Sir Herbert Charles Onslow Plumer.
