Description

Russell Court is a villa from the 1870s that has been divided into flats. It is constructed from snecked local grey limestone with stucco dressings and features a tarred slate roof. The building has stacks with rendered shafts, panels, and deeply projecting bracketed cornices. The main block is double-depth with an entrance on the south side and an east service wing at right angles, topped with an M-shaped roof.

The villa is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical three-bay front, which includes two windows, plus three additional windows on the service wing. The deep eaves of the main block are supported by paired moulded brackets. There is a moulded string course on the main block and a platband on the service wing, along with an eaves band and clasping pilasters. All windows have stuccoed surrounds and are mostly fitted with four-pane sashes that include horizontal glazing bars. The centre bay of the main block projects forward and has a separate roof.

A central porch projects from the front, featuring a modillion cornice and a blocking course. The outer doorway is round-headed, moulded, and pilastered, with a half-glazed door and a plain fanlight above. There are also a pair of round-headed windows above the doorway. To the left, there is a shallow projecting stack with a round-headed panel and a shaft that extends through the eaves, and a single-storey 20th-century addition wraps around the corner. The service wing has three first-floor windows and two ground-floor windows. The left return of the main block features a canted ground-floor window with a modillion cornice and two tripartite first-floor windows, one of which is round-headed and situated under a gable.

The interior has not been inspected but may still contain interesting features. Russell Court is noted for being a relatively unaltered and typical late 19th-century villa in Torquay, with its architectural details and massing highlighted by the use of stonework, which contrasts with the stucco commonly found in the village.
