Description
This is a large villa dating from the 1830s, located on Teignmouth Road, Torquay. The building is approximately rectangular in plan, with an east-facing garden front, the main entrance on the right return, and various additions to the rear (west), some of which are now in separate occupation.
The exterior features a gabled slate roof and stacks with rendered shafts and platbands. The entrance elevation is located in a gable end, with a projecting two-storey block and a deep cornice below the parapet. A moulded string runs at first-floor level. The front door is a two-leaf panelled door with a fanlight featuring lozenge glazing bars, flanked by Doric columns in antis with glazed panels between the columns and pilasters. A 12-pane sash window with Venetian shutters is above the door. A single-storey addition is located to the right, also with a deep cornice below the parapet. The main front has a three-window arrangement with 6 over 9-pane ground-floor sashes with floating cornices on consoles and Venetian shutters (one is missing). The first-floor windows are 2-pane sashes with Venetian shutters. A conservatory is attached to the left return.
The interior retains original features, including plaster cornices; some chimneypieces have been recently removed. A 1975 list description notes the hall contains a triple semicircular arched lobby to the right, with two cross vaults. The staircase rises in a narrow rectangular well with rounded ends, featuring an open string with plain bannisters, a continuous moulded handrail, swept out and round at the foot. Some original mouldings and cornices remain, although later alterations have occurred.
