Description

Yum Sing Cantonese Restaurant is a villa dating from the 1840s, located on Old Torwood Road in Torquay. The building is plastered with a hipped slate roof and features stacks with rendered shafts and projecting cornices. The main block is square in plan, with a garden front facing south towards Babbacombe Road and an entrance on the west side, along with a pair of rear service wings.

The exterior is two storeys high and presents a symmetrical three-bay garden front, characterized by deep eaves supported by paired brackets, a first-floor sill band, and a platband. The ground floor has pilaster strips on the left and right, and stuccoed quoins at the first floor. There are three ground-floor sash windows with six over nine panes, each with moulded architraves and fascias for sunblinds. The first floor features three sash windows with twelve panes, also with moulded architraves and sunblind fascias. The right side of the building has a single-storey flat-roofed bay with a tripartite window, while the left side has three bays divided by chimneystacks that project through the eaves. A modern glazed verandah has been added across the ground floor, which detracts from the original design. The interior has not been inspected but may still contain interesting features.
