Description

Grey House is a villa, divided into flats, dating from the 1850s. It features a cement-rendered exterior and a hipped slate roof, with stacks that have rendered shafts, platbands, and projecting cornices. The building has a double-depth plan and is two rooms wide, with the entrance located on the west side, accessible from a lane shared with Cambridge Lodge.

The exterior is two storeys high and presents an asymmetrical three-bay entrance front. It has deep eaves supported by brackets, an eaves band, and a sill band. There are pilaster strips on the left and right sides of the ground floor, and the first floor has stuccoed, rusticated quoins. The central bay features a projecting porch with a round-headed doorway that has a moulded architrave and a moulded string at the springing of the arch. The porch is topped with a deeply projecting moulded cornice below a parapet. To the right of the porch is a shallow projecting stack with its shaft extending through the eaves. The ground-floor window to the left and the first-floor windows to the left and centre have moulded architraves and are fitted with 12-pane sashes, although the centre window has had its lower sash replaced with a single pane.

To the left, there is a simpler three-window service wing with sash windows beneath a lower roof. The garden elevation mirrors this style, featuring a two-window arrangement and a canted bay window on the ground floor to the right, which has moulded architraves, a cornice, and a parapet. The first-floor windows have louvred shutters. The interior has not been inspected but may contain features of interest. The building is complete externally and forms an attractive pair with Cambridge Lodge.
