Description

Clifton Grove is a terrace of ten houses built in the 1870s in Torquay. The houses are arranged in pairs, with front doors centrally positioned between them. They are double-depth plan, one room wide, with a basement and three storeys. The stucco exterior features elaborate detailing, including deep eaves marked by corbelled brackets with sill blocks. Each house has a two-window front, with a ground-floor tripartite sash window featuring a floating cornice on consoles and four-pane sashes. The first-floor window also has sillblocks and a floating cornice on brackets, with a four-pane sash. Two gabled attic dormers are present, each with moulded architraves, pedimented gables, sill blocks, and four-pane sashes. A projecting porch with square section piers, plinths and capitals supports a shallow pediment over a four-panel front door with fielded panels and a plain overlight, set on a tiled porch floor. Original cast-iron rainwater goods are present, with downpipes and richly-moulded hoppers. The rear elevations retain their cement render and original windows, also richly decorated in the same style. The interior was not inspected, but original stairs with turned balusters and other features are likely to remain. The terrace is prominently positioned above Babbacombe Road.
