Description
The former Church of St Andrew is a Presbyterian church, later used as a Christian Scientist church, and is now a youth club. It was built in 1862 and is constructed from local grey Torquay limestone with freestone dressings and slate roofs. The building has a rectangular plan with a central gabled porch block facing Torwood Gardens and a projecting tower to the right.
The exterior features crow-stepped gables on the main block and a saddleback tower. The porch block has a projecting gabled entrance with two shoulder-arched doorways that have trefoil-pierced tympana and a pierced trefoil in the gable. Above the porch, there is a three-light plate traceried window, flanked by two-light windows. To the left of the main block, there is a massive flying buttress and a one-window bay beyond, which includes angle buttresses, a ground floor shoulder-headed window, and an arched one-light window above. There is also a lean-to block between the porch and the flying buttress with two shoulder-headed lights. The three-stage saddleback tower to the right has angle buttresses and features one and two-light windows, some with cusped heads.
Inside, there are four hammer-beam trusses with arch braces, although the fittings have been removed. The church is noted for its striking design and prominent location.
