Description
Sydore is a house, built around 1835-45, and shown on Ordnance Survey maps as Sorel. It was in use as a hotel when surveyed. The house is of classical style and has a hipped slate roof, stacks with rendered shafts, moulded panels and deep projecting cornices.
The plan is rectangular, with a doorway on the east side leading to a large stair hall containing an open-well staircase. The symmetrical three-window entrance front has an eaves band and moulded sill bands at second and first-floor levels. A severe porch, with a projecting cornice and stepped parapet, features a round-headed outer doorway with a large, plain fanlight. A later 19th-century half-glazed inner door has margin panes and a low panel. The facade contains three six-pane sashes to the second floor, and three twelve-pane sashes with moulded architraves to the first floor. A two-bay garden front continues in the same style; the ground floor here has a shallow canted bay with a parapet and tall, round-headed windows with glazing bars, which has been altered with a further, central canted glazed bay. A tent-roofed verandah with a lead roof, fretted fascia and turned timber columns is also present.
The rear elevation has four bays, with full-height round-headed ground-floor windows and a flat-roofed, single-storey addition. Interior features include original plaster cornices, doors, door cases, and a fine staircase with turned balusters.
