Description

35 and 37 Meadfoot Lane are a pair of houses built between 1865 and 1875, similar in style to Nos 39-53, which were designed by JW Rowell. They are constructed from snecked local grey limestone with painted dressings and have a slate roof that is gabled at the ends. The chimney stacks are rendered with diagonally-set shafts and projecting cornices.

The overall plan is U-shaped, with each house being single-depth and featuring an outer rear wing at right angles, along with smaller rear projections between the wings. The houses are two storeys tall, with painted projecting quoins and rusticated surrounds to the windows, which are mostly fitted with high-transomed casements. The gables have cusped bargeboards, and the front has an asymmetrical arrangement of four windows.

No. 35, located on the right, projects forward and has a gabled front. The front doors of both houses are centrally located under a sloping porch hood, which is adorned with decoratively-cut slates on cusped brackets. Above, there is a hipped half-dormer that contains two one-light windows. No. 37, to the left, features a square bay window on the ground floor with crank-arched lights, and above it are two-light windows in a gabled half-dormer. There are also two windows in the gabled projection to the right. The other elevations maintain the same architectural style.

The interior has not been inspected but may contain features of interest.
