Description

No. 53 is a house built between 1865 and 1875, likely designed by JW Rowell, and is part of a symmetrical terrace that includes Nos 39-51. The building is constructed from snecked local grey limestone rubble with painted dressings and features a slate roof with stone chimney stacks and painted quoins.

The house has an irregular plan, with the left end built against the wall of Vane Hill Road. It has a short front projecting wing, with the entrance located on the right side of this wing. The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical arrangement of windows. The central gabled wing has rusticated painted quoins and deep verges supported by moulded brackets, along with cusped bargeboards.

There is one window on the ground floor and one on the first floor, both with painted architraves, although they have been reglazed with late 20th-century windows. To the left of the wing, a cranked archway with painted dressings leads to the rear of the house, featuring an 8-pane sash window above. To the right of the wing, there is one ground floor window, also reglazed in the late 20th century, and a first-floor 8-pane sash window set in a gabled dormer with cusped bargeboards. The entrance to the wing has a crank-arched doorway. The garden is enclosed by railings topped with bud finials. The interior has not been inspected but may contain interesting features.
