Description
Merlewood is a house, dating to the 1840s, and partly used as a restaurant. It is constructed of stucco and has a gabled slate roof with stacks that have set-offs, moulded strings, and octagonal shafts with cornices. The building is in a Tudor Domestic style. The overall plan is L-shaped.
The exterior features a moulded cornice below a coped parapet. Original windows are recessed with chamfered architraves, and contain small-pane sashes. The two-window garden front is asymmetrical, with a shallow gabled projection to the right. This projection includes an original canted bay on the ground floor, with moulded frames and 6 over 1-pane sashes. Above this is a 2-light first-floor window with a moulded frame and 4 over 6-pane sashes. A similar 3-light window is on the first floor to the left. A ground-floor bay, added in the Edwardian period, has high-transomed plate glass windows. The left return has a single window and a shallow projecting stack to the right. A single-storey addition with a flat roof, dating to the 20th century, is considered unsympathetic. The interior has not been inspected, but may contain original features.
