Description
St Anne's is a large villa built in the late 1830s or early 1840s. It features a cement-rendered exterior and a gabled slate roof, with stacks that have rendered shafts and platbands. The building has a large double-depth rectangular main range with the entrance located on the east side and a service wing on the north.
The villa is two storeys tall and has deep eaves, a platband, and a moulded sill band. The entrance front is almost symmetrical, consisting of three bays, with a two-window service wing to the right. There are two gables at the front, and a central Roman Doric porch supported by paired columns and topped with a deep entablature. The entrance includes a six-panel front door with panelled reveals, flanked by glazed panels and an overlight. The windows are 12-pane sash windows, with one having been reglazed, and there are blind recesses in the left-hand bay.
The left return features a three-bay layout with high transomed French windows on the ground floor and six over nine-pane sashes on the first floor, which have later balconies with cast-iron panels. The west garden elevation retains early 19th-century sash windows, along with an early 20th-century flat-roofed single-storey addition that is cement-rendered and glazed with two-pane sashes. The interior has not been inspected but may contain interesting features. St Anne's is an early villa in Torquay, located in an area where many villas still maintain their original garden plots.
