Description

Singleton is a villa believed to have been built in 1836 and was unoccupied at the time of the survey. The building is plastered and features a hipped slate roof with stacks that have plastered shafts and projecting cornices. The plan consists of a double-depth rectangular main block with the entrance located on the west side and a service block to the north.

The exterior is two storeys high with deep eaves supported by shaped paired brackets and a platband. The entrance front has one window and is slightly set forward, featuring a gabled center with shallow projecting stacks on either side. A projecting flat-roofed open porch has a central segmental-headed arch flanked by narrow round-headed arches, all adorned with keyblocks and capitals, and a deep projecting cornice below the parapet. The first-floor window is round-headed and recessed, fitted with a small-pane sash that has radial glazing bars and shaped Venetian shutters. The front door is panelled and includes an overlight with lozenge glazing bars.

To the right, there is a verandah supported by chamfered posts, featuring a fretted fascia that returns across the three-bay right return. This return has 12-pane first-floor sashes with Venetian shutters. The ground-floor French windows had been reglazed, and the shutters were missing at the time of the survey. A conservatory is located at the south-east end of the villa.

Although the interior was not inspected, it is likely to retain interesting features. The villa is similar in style to Mintons, which is located on the opposite side of the road. Singleton also preserves its 19th-century garden plot, and the external details are well-preserved, with the interior said to be undivided, which is rare for a villa of this size in Torquay.
