Description

St Anthony, including the garden wall and gate piers, is a house located on Higher Woodfield Road in Torquay, dating from around the 1850s. Originally shown as Elm Cottage on the 1866 Ordnance Survey map, the building features plastered walls and a gabled slate roof adorned with pierced crested ridge tiles. It has clustered octagonal chimney shafts with deep cornices and some original tapering octagonal chimney-pots, all reflecting a domestic Tudor style.

The house has a T-plan layout, with an octagonal porch situated at the angle between the main block and the rear wing on the south side. It stands two storeys high, with a basement and attic, and presents a three-window entrance front. The gabled end of the rear wing projects to the front on the left side. The eaves are deep, and the windows have chamfered frames. The octagonal porch features a pyramidal roof with lead rolls, diamond-pattern slates, and a wrought-iron finial. The original plank door is complemented by ornamental strap hinges and flanked by tall windows with glazing bars. To the left, there is a ground-floor bay window with a hipped roof topped by iron cresting. The first floor includes three windows, one of which is a gabled oriel.

The right side of the house, which faces the road, has a canted bay window with a hipped roof covered in diamond-pattern slates and lead rolls, and the windows are fitted with moulded mullions. Although the interior has not been inspected, it may still contain interesting features.

Additional features include steps leading down to the basement on the left side of the porch, which retain original iron railings with fleur de lis finials. The garden is enclosed by low walls with ramped coping and is marked by octagonal gate piers topped with pyramidal caps. St Anthony is noted as an unusually small example of a Tudor style villa, situated in one of the better-preserved areas of Torquay.
