Description

No. 28 Fore Street is a house dating from around the mid-18th century. It is constructed of rendered and painted stone rubble, with some areas of slate hanging on the side of the rear projecting wing. The roof is made of rag slate, partly cement-washed and bitumen-coated, featuring a gable end on the right, a canted hipped end on the left, a half-hipped section for the stair projection at the rear, and a hipped end for the rear projecting wing on the right. There is a brick axial chimney stack, which was originally a rear lateral stack serving the room on the right.

The plan of the house has been altered; it likely started as a two-room layout with the right-hand room heated by the rear lateral stack, and a further room was added to the rear on the right. The entrance may have been moved from near the center to the right-hand side of the front elevation. The front elevation is partly obscured by a later property added to the front.

The house has two storeys and an asymmetrical two-window front. The entrance, which is part-glazed and dates from the 19th century, is located on the right. Above, there are two gabled half-dormers with four-pane sash windows. The rear projecting wing features 19th-century windows.

Inside, there is 19th-century joinery and a 20th-century chimney piece in the room on the right. The building has picturesque elevations that face a narrow alley on the side and rear.
