Description

The Golden Lion Inn is a public house dating from the early 18th century, located on the west side of Fore Street in Port Isaac. The building is constructed of stone rubble, with some rendering on the seaward side, and features a slate roof that has a hipped end on the left, a gable end on the right, and a hipped rear projecting wing on the left. There is a brick chimney stack on the right-hand gable end, although the end stacks for the two heated rooms on the left have been removed.

The inn is built into the hillside, with a basement that was likely originally used for storage. The plan has been altered, with the rear wing being remodelled. It may have originally had an overall 'L' shaped plan with a central cross passage, two rooms on the left, and one on the right, all heated by end stacks, with a staircase located at the rear of the passage. There is a rear entrance from Fore Street that leads to the back of the right-hand room.

The building has three storeys and an attic, featuring a symmetrical three-window front. The ground floor includes dressed stone segmental arches, with a 19th-century 16-pane sash window to the left, and plank doors to the right and in the centre. The first floor has three tall 18-pane horned sash windows, likely from the 19th century, with brick segmental arches above them. The second floor has three 12-pane sashes, two of which have horns, and there is a 6-pane sash in a full dormer with a raked roof above. The rear elevation features an 18-pane sash window from the 18th century, complete with heavy glazing bars.

Inside, the room on the left has a moulded plasterwork ceiling and a painted bolection moulded chimney-piece. The room in the projecting wing at the rear contains a 19th-century stove made by Oatey and Martyn of Wadebridge. There are several 18th-century two-panel doors and 19th-century six-panel doors throughout the inn. The 18th-century closed string open well staircase has square newels, a moulded rail, and turned balusters. The upper floors have not been inspected.
