Description
The Harbour Shop, located on the north side of Fore Street in Port Isaac, is a house and shop that partly extends into the adjoining property, The Wheelhouse Restaurant. The main part of the building likely dates from the mid-19th century, although it may have earlier origins, while the left range is from the early 17th century. The main range features a stone rubble basement with an upper structure made of stuccoed and rendered softwood framing. It has a slate roof with a gable end on the left and a canted end on the right, along with a projecting chimney stack on the right side that has a brick shaft.
The building has a two-room single depth plan, with a 20th-century shop on the ground floor and a flat above that can be accessed by an external stair on the right side wall or from within the shop. It consists of three storeys and a basement, presenting an almost symmetrical two-window front. The ground floor features a 20th-century shop front, while the first floor has 12-pane hornless sash windows with moulded and exposed sash boxes. The second floor includes 4-pane sashes with original moulded sash boxes. The right-hand side wall is canted at the front to accommodate the projecting chimney stack, which has an external stair at the rear of the projection. To the left, the Harbour Shop includes a large projecting front lateral chimney stack that was originally part of The Wheelhouse Restaurant.
Inside the shop, alterations have been made, but the basement contains a large fireplace with a possibly renewed roughly cut lintel. There is a blocked fireplace in the front lateral chimney stack, which was originally part of The Wheelhouse Restaurant. The first floor features a 19th-century chimney piece and ceiling beams.
