Description

Woodfield is a villa built in the 1840s, with early 20th-century alterations, and has been converted into holiday accommodation. It was constructed by Harvey (Ellis) for Edward Vivian, who co-founded the Torquay Natural History Society, using some materials from Torwood Manor House. The building features local grey limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, while the masonry from the Edwardian additions is brought to course. It has slate roofs and stacks with rendered, diagonally-set shafts and deep cornices.

The villa has an irregular plan that steps down a steep slope, with a first-floor entrance on the east side facing Woodfield Road. The exterior consists of one, two, and three storeys. The entrance elevation has three bays, with an early 20th-century projecting porch on the left that features a coped gable with kneelers, a Tudor-arched outer doorway, and an early 20th-century two-leaf door. In the centre, there is a single-storey early 20th-century projection that is embattled and incorporates a five-light mullioned and transomed stair window with stained glass. The left-hand bay is blind and has a projecting stack with triple shafts.

The irregular five-window west front includes two gables and a canted bay window on the ground floor with a parapet, showcasing some original glazing with octagonal panes and margin glazing. Other windows are two- and three-light with moulded frames and mullions. To the left, there is an Edwardian addition that is roughcast and features a bowed oriel on a buttress.

Inside, most of the features are early 20th-century, including the staircase, but there is a charming 1840s Gothick chimneypiece in the hall.
