Description

Greenwood is a villa dating from the 1840s, with alterations in the late 20th century including a raised roof for conversion into flats. The villa is constructed of plastered walls with a slate mansard roof, and features stacks with rendered shafts, bands, and projecting cornices. It is designed in a Classical style.

The building is roughly square on plan, with the main entrance on the southwest side, fronting onto Torwood Gardens. The interior has been replanned. Externally, the villa is two storeys high facing the road, but three storeys high overlooking the park. The road-facing elevation has plain pilasters, an eaves band below a projecting cornice with a blocking course, and a first-floor string course. The three-bay entrance front has a broken forward centre bay topped with a pediment, above which rises a wide chimney shaft. A tall, pilastered doorway is capped with a cornice; the reveals have incised panels and the doorway contains a 20th-century front door and a round-headed overlight. Ground-floor windows are set within original embrasures and have been reglazed with two-pane horned sashes. A similar first-floor centre window features a floating cornice on brackets, and is flanked by round-headed niches. The left return is in a similar style but is three storeys high, with a later two-storey canted bay. Several windows have been reglazed with aluminium sashes. The right return is also in a similar style, with a small-pane stair sash window. The elevation overlooking the park has blind niches in the centre bay on the first and second floors, flanked by triplet windows with floating cornices to the second floor and pediments on consoles to the first floor. Four 20th-century windows are located on the ground floor.

Inside, the staircase has turned balusters, likely original, although the interior partitions have been altered in the 20th century. Greenwood is one of a group of villas informally arranged around a public park.
