Description
The Former St Andrews Church on Atholl Street was designed by Andrew Heiton Junior and built between 1884 and 1885. This five-bay, symmetrical Gothic church features a multi-gabled elevation and is flanked by tenement buildings. The structure is buttressed and constructed of ashlar stone, with a base course and hoodmoulding. The central bay is taller and slightly advanced, featuring a Gothic porch with a Gothic-arched doorway and a mandorla that displays a figure of St Andrew above. The church has tracery windows throughout.
To the right, the outer bay is two stories high and includes a five-window arcade on the upper storey supported by Corinthian columns. The outer bay to the left is three stories tall and features a large four-light stair window with stone mullions and transoms on the upper two storeys, along with a small piended dormer. The windows are diamond-shaped and have leaded panes, and the roof is covered with grey slates.
Inside, the pews have been removed, but there are war memorial plaques present. A staircase with decorative metal balusters and a timber banister adds to the interior features.
