Description
17 Atholl Street is a mid-19th century, two-storey and attic Classical tenement building featuring ten bays. It consists of a pair of symmetrical, five-bay houses situated on a corner site, with a shop located at the ground level. The exterior is finished in painted ashlar with contrasting painted margins, and includes a base course, cill course, eaves cornice, and blocking course. The ground floor windows are set within segmental-arched recesses, while the first-floor windows have moulded architraves. Decorative, bracketed iron balconies adorn the first floor, and there are two pedimented doorpieces, one of which has a pair of timber entrance doors with two-light windows above.
The left side of the building has five bays, with the second and fourth bays advanced. The first-floor windows feature moulded panels above. There are later flat-roofed dormers present. The right side also has five bays, with a central open segmental-arched pedimented aedicule that has a round-arched opening at the wallhead. The first-floor windows here also have panels above, complemented by bracketed cornices. The pedimented dormers break the wallhead.
The elevation facing North William Street consists of two bays, with a former segmental-arched opening at the ground level that has been converted to a door in 2009. Above this, there is a blind tripartite window.
The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows with horns, and is covered with grey slates. Some cast iron rainwater goods are present, along with console skews and brick gable and ridge stacks.
Inside, some decorative cornicing can be seen in the flat at number 17. The close stairwell leading to number 15 has a D-plan layout, with decorative metal balusters and a timber banister.
