Description

Belvedere House Hotel and Braddons Hill House is a villa, dating from the 1830s, which has been divided into a house and hotel. The building is roughcast with stucco dressings, and has a slate roof, with hipped ends to Braddons Hill House and gabled ends to the Belvedere Hotel block. It is built in an Italianate style. The plan is a T-shape, with Braddons Hill House facing west and the hotel forming a wing to the east. The south elevation has 1:4 bays, with giant pilasters and an entablature. There is a projecting cornice and parapet to the four right-hand bays, and a slate-hung attic storey above. The left-hand bay has a moulded cornice above the entablature, and the second storey has paired pilasters on the left and right. The ground and first floors have 12-pane sashes, except for the first floor on the right, which is blocked. The left-hand bay has ground and first-floor tripartite small-pane sashes. On the second floor, there is a 12-pane horned sash. The right return has the entrance to the hotel, which features a round-headed doorway with pilasters, a pedimented hood, and a panelled soffit. The door is panelled and has a fanlight, once incorporating an integral light. There are three first-floor and two ground-floor 12-pane sashes. The interior has not been inspected, but may retain features of interest. This is one of the earlier villas built in Torquay.
